#TRT100k Volunteer Spotlight: Steve

To celebrate reaching 100,000 volunteer hours, this week we will be highlighting some of the key volunteers that have helped us achieve this milestone. Today we would like to highlight one of our most faithful weekend volunteers, Steve! Steve has been serving with us from the very beginning and he teaches us something new every time he comes out. We have Steve to thank for 300 of TRT's total 100,000 volunteer hours.

A little about Steve's involvement with our mission:

How did you first get involved with The Restoration Team:

I volunteered through my church to help clean up homes very soon after Hurricane Harvey hit. I believe that this was when TRT first started their ministry - I have been involved ever since.

Do you have a favorite project/client/experience that you remember while serving with The Restoration Team:

I don't remember the specific client but at one house we had to jack up floor joists one by one to be able to replace a very sad looking beam - we thought we were just going to be replacing siding but sometimes you get surprised!

What does this ministry mean to you? Why do you keep coming back to serve:

I'm very fortunate to be able to keep my home in good shape but there are others who are not as fortunate. My own home has been flooded in the past and so I know how devastating it can be. God gave me skills that are ideally suited to TRT's work and he has called me to His ministry to use those skills through TRT. At the end of each workday, I always say to the TRT leader, "Thank you for letting me do God's work."

What would you tell someone looking to get involved with our ministry:

It is incredibly rewarding work. You really do not have to have any specific experience or skills as there are plenty of people willing to teach and guide you through the work (myself included). You might even learn some new skills that will come in handy in another part of your life. All you need is a good work ethic and a willingness to try new things - oh, and maybe some clothes that you don't mind getting a bit dirty!

Thank you Steve for your continued involvement in our mission and for the countless Saturdays that you have spent on our worksites. Now hurry up and retire already so you can volunteer during the week!
